OGDEN — Another Utah Highway Patrol trooper was hit on the freeway Saturday.

Just before 1 p.m., two troopers responded to a crash on Interstate 15 in Ogden. According to UHP, while troopers were providing traffic control around the crash, a Ford Escape veered toward the troopers, travelling between 50 and 60 miles per hour.

A trooper sitting in his vehicle saw the Escape and attempted to put his vehicle in drive to avoid the SUV, but was unable to do so before he was struck and the Escape rolled on its side.

UHP said the 79-year-old Canadian male driver of the Escape was transported to the hospital with a critical head injury. His wife, who was a passenger in the front seat, was uninjured. The trooper sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

According to UHP, this is the 16th officer to be struck by a vehicle in 2013. They again urged drivers to slow down for emergency vehicles.

"That amounts to eight troopers a month, two troopers every week," UHP wrote in a press release. "When (motorists) see the red and blue flashing lights ahead of them, they need to slow down and pass the incident with caution."
