SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans to preserve the historic nature of the old Provo Tabernacle as it remakes the building into the new Provo City Center Temple.
The Daily Herald reports the church recently gave Provo's community development office updated official bid plans for the temple and surrounding grounds.
The 800 pages of plans include descriptions, elevations, floor plans and landscaping. They show the Church is going to great lengths to preserve the historical nature of the former historic Provo Tabernacle, which burned down in 2010.
"The church is into preservation, thank goodness," Provo commercial plans examiner Skip Tandy told the Herald.
The Mormon Report at LDSliving.com commented, "Good news! The Church will incorporate all that remains of the Provo Tabernacle into the new temple, and the facade will greatly resemble the old tabernacle. It looks beautiful!"
David Hall, director of temple design services, told the Herald the church went to great lengths to document the elements of the tabernacle that survived the fire.
The interior won't be restored exactly as it was, because the building is being repurposed as a temple. But Hall told the paper, "Upon entering the new temple, it's familiarity to the historic tabernacle will be evident."

The temple is located on University Avenue between Center Street and 100 South. Plans to construct the temple were announced in Oct. 2011 and the groundbreaking was last May.
