SALT LAKE CITY — A man wanted for murder in his native country was turned over to Mexican officials Wednesday.

According to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, Saul Camargo-Avendano, 41, a Mexican national, was wanted by Mexican authorities for the February 2011 murder of Ensenada councilman Arturo Castellanos-Ruiz in Baja California.

Camargo-Avendano was charged, along with seven other suspects, by Mexican authorities for the slaying. They believe it is connected to a labor union dispute, ICE said.

In December, local Salt Lake police arrested and booked Camargo-Avendano into the Salt Lake County Jail. Record checks by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers indicated Camargo-Avendano was a possible homicide suspect in Mexico. Representatives of the Mexican Attorney General's Office confirmed a warrant for his arrest.

Utah state charges against the man were then dismissed and local authorities transferred custody of the man to ICE.

A previous order of removal was reinstated associated with a December 2011 removal. According to ICE, authorities removed Camargo-Avendano twice in the same day when he attempted to enter the U.S. illegally.

ICE officials transported Camargo-Avendano from Salt Lake City to San Diego, Calif. Wednesday. Once at the San Ysidro border crossing, they turned him over to Mexican officials.
