SALT LAKE CITY — Legendary former KSL anchor Dick Nourse is once again engaged in a battle with cancer.
The veteran newsman has twice overcome cancer. In 1980, he shared the details of his treatment for non-Hodgkins lymphoma with KSL audiences. Sixteen years later, he endured and ultimately survived a bout with prostate cancer.
In mid-December, Nourse underwent exploratory surgery at LDS Hospital, where throat cancer was found, according to a press release.
"When it comes to fighting cancer, there's no more powerful medicine than the love and support of family and friends," Nourse said in a statement. "I'm truly blessed."
He is now recovering from the surgery at his home and will begin radiation and chemotherapy treatment soon, and doctors say he has a good prognosis, according to the release.
Nourse retired as KSL News anchor in 2007 after 43 years with the station. He began at the station at age 24 after landing a job as weekend anchor. he simply dropped into the station for an unannounced interview and was quickly offered the job.
He is known for his direct delivery of the news and his commanding baritone.
"(My family's) support, including that shown by members of my extended "TV family," was key to my recovery during my first battles with cancer, and it is a great source of strength for me now," Nourse said in a statement. "My wife, Deb, and I are extremely grateful. We know we'll get through this."
