ROOSEVELT — Three men are behind bars after a fourth man was beaten so badly that investigators say his head swelled to twice its normal size.

Mison Sengloumpha, 51, Antonio Alvarez, 31, and Luis Alvarez, 28, are each charged in 8th District Court with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony. They each made initial court appearances Thursday.

Roosevelt police say the men — who were all employees of a company that performs seismic testing for the oil and gas industry — assaulted another man in the early morning hours of Dec. 14 at the Frontier Motel, 75 S. Main, following a night of heavy drinking.

Officers were called about 3:50 a.m. after someone found a man in an alley south of the motel. The man was taken to Uintah Basin Medical Center, where he was treated for bruises to his face, head, neck, ear, arms and hands, according to charging documents.

"(He) did not remember what happened," Roosevelt police detective Pete Butcher wrote, adding that the man "was unable to speak coherently."

"His head was swollen to twice its normal size," Butcher told the Deseret News Friday.

A woman who had met the injured man at a bar earlier in the evening, and come back to the motel with him, told investigators she saw several men beating the man near the motel. She said one of them was named Antonio, the charges state.

Officers located Antonio Alvarez and his brother, Luis, in a room at the motel with two women. The women told investigators "an altercation" began earlier in the night in Sengloumpha's motel room before moving to the parking lot, according to the charges.

Luis Alvarez also told police that the injured man was hit with a motel room chair with so much force that the chair broke, Butcher said. Another chair in the room was also broken during the altercation, and the remains of two broken whiskey bottles were recovered from the motel parking lot, the detective said.

Motel staff told officers that Sengloumpha had left Roosevelt shortly after the incident. His supervisors said he was headed to Salt Lake City International Airport to catch a flight home to Alaska. Airport police were notified and took Sengloumpha into custody.

Sengloumpha and the Alvarez brothers, who are from Phoenix, remain in the Duchesne County Jail. Preliminary hearings for the three men have been set for Jan. 10.
