SALT LAKE CITY — A Springville man convicted of possessing and producing child pornography was sentenced to 17 years in federal prison Tuesday.

Garrick Veater, 28, was found guilty in June of child porn charges filed in October 2009. Veater will be subject to a 15-year supervised release upon completing his sentence and will be required to register as a sex offender. He also will be required to forfeit a phone and computer as part of the judgement.

Prosecutors had initially recommended a 40-year sentence, asserting Veater shows an unwillingness to accept responsibility for his actions and insists he does not require sex offender therapy.

Sentencing terms
  • 17 years in prison
  • 15-year supervised release
  • Register as a sex offender
  • Forfeit phone and computer

Veater was arrested in September 2009 after a Provo woman reported to police there were compromising pictures of her 5-year-old daughter on Veater's phone. An investigation of Veater's electronic devices led to the discovery of photos of more children.

The jury found all 18 images discovered in the investigation to be child pornography.
