SALT LAKE CITY — A hunter was rescued after spending much of the day trying to get off a mountain with an injured leg.

The man had been hunting early in the morning around 7 a.m., according to firefighter Gary McCarty, when he slipped, fell and injued himself in the lower leg.

He spent the day trying to get off the mountainside near Emigration Canyon when exhaustion, dehydration and his injuries made it too difficult to continue, McCarty said.

As he entered the Salt Lake Valley, he called 911. Heavy rescue crews were dispatched to an area near 850 Donner way and took him off the mountain using a rope rescue system. McCarty called the rescue "steep, slippery and cold."

The man would likely be taken to the hospital for treatment, McCarty said.

"Just a reminder to everybody: It's slippery and cold up there," he said. "Be prepared. Be prepared for worst-case scenarios."
