VERNAL — A man has been arrested after violently assaulting a woman and her daughter in Vernal on Wednesday.

Uintah County deputies were contacted Wednesday night by a 21-year-old woman who said she had been assaulted by Brandon Martin Castillo, 27, with whom she said she was in a relationship.

The woman told police she and Castillo got in an argument at his residence, during which he produced a handgun and told the woman they were going for a ride. Castillo assaulted the woman multiple times during the car ride, according to police reports.

He took the victim and her 3-year-old daughter in his vehicle to a location south of Vernal, stopped the vehicle on a dirt road and made the victim exit the vehicle, at which point he shot her in the lower leg with a plastic bullet.

Castillo used a .45-caliber pistol that was loaded with plastic bullets designed for target practice, according to Uintah County Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Fletcher.

The woman told police that as she tried to get away from Castillo, he shot her in the other leg with another plastic bullet. He then pulled the 3-year-old from the vehicle and pointed the gun at her.

Castillo transported the woman and her child back to his residence, at which point the victim left with her child.

Castillo was arrested Wednesday and is being held without bail in the Uintah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping, child kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault.
