SALT LAKE CITY — The countdown is over. Brighton, the first resort of the ski and snowboard season is open and hundreds are already taking advantage.

If you're looking for a group of happy people, Brighton is the place to be.

"It's just really exciting and fun and I can't wait," said snowboarder Rose Strubel.

For some, opening day of the ski and snowboard is a big deal. Dozens of people woke up early to be one of the first to welcome in the new season at Brighton Ski Resort. For many, that meant skipping out on something else, such as school.

With chairs prepped and the slopes freshly graded, the staff at Brighton was anxious to open.

"We have a 39 inch base, that's after machine groomed packed down snow, so there is plenty of snow," said Brighton spokesperson Jared Winkler.

By 9 a.m. the first riders took their mark. Some had been waiting in line for an hour.

"We've got the first chair of the season in the whole state of Utah, which is pretty rad," said snowboarder Alisa Evans.

A few shuffles and a couple scoots later, Evans and her friends were on their way, the first to hit the slopes. About 200 people took hit the mountain in the first hour, with many more expected throughout the day.

Those first down the mountain said the conditions are perfect, slick but not icy.

Brighton was the first to open but several more open this week. Solitude will open tomorrow, Snowbird on Thursday, and Alta and Brian Head on Friday, and then Park City on Saturday.
