WEST POINT — A West Point man is in serious condition after a pickup he was working on fell on top of him when the jack he was using failed.

The 42-year-old male, whose name has not been released, was working between the wheel and the left fender of the truck with the vehicle jacked when the vehicle fell on top of him.

Travis Fausett, who was working on the car with the man, said the two had the truck jacked up, but it "slipped off somehow" and pinned him.

"He was smashed in there pretty good," Fausett said. "When it happened, I didn't know what was going on — I just knew he was in a lot of pain."

Fausett said the man was unconscious for no more than a couple minutes before he was pulled from under the vehicle.

Deputy Sheriff Scott Harper with the West Point Police Department said Davis County paramedics arrived within one minute of the call and found the man semiconscious with severe chest injuries. The man was air-lifted to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

"It is an unfortunate accident," Harper said. "We know this man and know he is a very, very good mechanic. I'm sure he did take precautions."

Police are investigating the cause of the failed jack.
