SARATOGA SPRINGS — Flooding in Saratoga Springs Saturday night forced several families to evacuate their homes. Some roads were closed due to mudslides.
Approximately 24 homes have been impacted by the flooding in the area around the Talons Cove Golf Course and the Jacobs Ranch.
A storm that tore through Tooele County earlier in the day moved East and into Utah County, dropping intense rain, hail and winds as high as 60 mph. About an inch of rain fell between 7 and 8 p.m. and fell in part over the burn scar of the Dump Fire that blazed through the hills above Saratoga Springs in late June. The burn scar allowed large amounts of water to flow.
Neighbors in the subdivision west of the Saratoga Springs golf course report that a few homes are being evacuated. Power and gas have been shut off as a precaution. There were even reports that street flows were so powerful they floated a car down the road.
The Utah Red Cross was dispatched to Saratoga Springs around 9 p.m. to assist people that were forced from their homes due to mudslides, and any families that have been displaced can also find shelter at the LDS Stake Center located at at 2947 Swainson Ave.
Cars were also having having difficulty navigating the roads and leaving the area. late Saturday night Redwood Road was closed and impassible at about 2000 South. Centennial Blvd opened late as an alternative to Redwood Road. Highway 68 was closed at mile post 28.
The city has asked that any vehicles coming from South of the city are asked to reroute around Utah Lake. City crews and UDOT crews worked to clear the road. Backhoes and dump trucks were also brought in to clear the roads of debris and mud.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
