Utah's STD Rates Among Lowest in Nation
November 14th, 2007 @ 7:47am

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A new report shows Utah has some of the lowest rates of sexually transmitted diseases in the country. But health officials are still alarmed that the state's number of chlamydia and gonorrhea cases have reached unprecedented levels

The Centers for Disease Control report shows that nationally, chlamydia is the most commonly reported infectious disease.

The CDC estimates that about 19 million new STD infections occur each year.

More than 1 million cases of chlamydia -- an all-time high --were reported in 2006. That includes 5,092 in Utah. Utah was ranked 46th.

The bacterial infection can be easily treated with antibiotics, though it can cause infertility in women if it goes undiagnosed.
