CENTERVILLE - A brush fire is burning in the hills above Centerville, causing concern among homeowners nearby. But progress has been made on containing it.

The fire started at about 8 p.m. Monday night. There is no word yet on the total size of the fire, but officials said that it is roughly contained on the West and East sides. it has been burning at about 1825 N Main St.

It is not immediately threatening homes, but limited and voluntary evacuations were ordered for some residents. Three homes decided to follow that call for evacuation.

Fire crews were still working to protect a home on the south side of the fire at about 10:30 p.m.

Dorothy Jones, a local resident, said it's not uncommon to see fires in the area. According to her, kids often play in the are and gun owners often sight their weapons in those hills currently ablaze.

"With school being out and weather being the way it is, kids are up their, hiking up there," Jones said.

She called the fire small compared to a similar fire in the area last year. She said hills have been much drier than last year and is concerned about the possibility of more fires on the hillside.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
