TOOELE COUNTY — Fire crews are fighting a fast moving wildfire that forced closure of a major road in Tooele County Thursday afternoon.

State Route 73 between Tooele and Cedar Fort was closed for a time Thursday afternoon as firefighters worked to gain control of the blaze. One lane of the road was later opened, but drivers could only get through with a Utah Highway Patrol vehicle escort.

As firefighters got a better handle on the situation, SR 73 was reopened.

Fire officials say the fire was sparked by an equipment malfunction around 8:30 Thursday morning and quickly spread. It has now grown to 500 acres.

While the fire is not threatening any structures, crews are worried about it spreading to nearby BLM land. In that case, campgrounds may have to be evacuated.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
