BEAVER COUNTY — The people who ended up with a bullet hole in their truck as the result of a road rage incident near Beaver are telling their side of the story.
Tuesday Beaver County Sheriff Cameron Noel said Jose Rosales Casas of California brandished a gun on I-15 south of Beaver Sunday night, and ultimately fired one shot into the cabin of another truck he claimed was tailgating and trying to run him off the road.
According to the people in the other vehicle -- who didn't want KSL to use their names or show their faces -- that is not what happened at all.
"We didn't think he could see us behind there because his view was blocked," said a man who was riding in the truck that was fired on. "So we flashed our lights. He eventually moved over. We thought no big deal."
As they passed Casas, they say he flashed a gun at them. They then went into defensive mode by swerving.
"We kept weaving back and forth to keep the man with the gun behind us," the man said.
Tuesday Noel said, "Instead of just pulling off the road, they both had ample opportunity to exit the freeway and they chose not to do that."
The driver of the truck with the bullet hole said, "If there was a gun on you, do you think you would pull over to the side of the road and have somebody walk up to you and shoot you? No. Also, there are cars behind us. You can't just stop. The only other option is to speed up, call 911 and have the police pull them over."
Casas faces charges of attempted aggravated murder and possession of marijuana, which deputies say they found in his truck. Charges against the other driver have not been ruled out. The Beaver County attorney is screening the case.
