HOLLADAY — Police are questioning a man in connection with a jewelry store robbery that took place Tuesday around 5 p.m.
Two males wearing ski masks and brandishing handguns entered Diamond’s Custom Jewelers, 6065 S. Highland Drive, and demanded that everyone get on the floor, according to Unified Police Department spokesman Lt. Justin Hoyal.
The masked gunmen smashed glass jewelry cases, took jewelry, then fled by car.
Two female customers were injured as they attempted to comply with robbers' demands to get on the floor.
An 80-year-old woman received hip injuries, and an 86-year-old woman received lacerations to the hands and face, Hoyal said.
Unified Police issued a description of the suspects' vehicle — a black sedan with duct tape on driver's side windows — along with a partial plate number.
A Murray City police officer located a vehicle matching that description at 5965 S. Stratler St. about 30 minutes later, and a man there was detained for questioning.
Suspects are described as a 6 foot 2 inch, 280-pound African-American male wearing brown sweats and a black ski mask, and a 5 foot 4 inch, 145-pound male of unknown race wearing a dark shirt and jeans and a black ski mask.
"I saw two men push their way out of the door, they were dressed in dark clothes and they were rushing," witness Davis Farnsworth said.
"The owner came out yelling and I realized, oh, something awful has happened. The men got into a car and I saw, I realized the owner was yelling the license plate number."
The value of stolen jewelry is not yet known, but would not be released, Hoyal said.
