SALT LAKE CITY — A father and adult son were killed Tuesday night when their vehicle slid into oncoming traffic and was hit by a semitrailer.
It happened on I-15 just north of SR193. The Utah Highway Patrol said the driver of a Ford, 63-year-old Jorge Revilla, lost control of his vehicle. It went into the median, through a cable barrier, and into southbound traffic.
Trooper Jason Sills said, "When they came into the southbound side they were sideways on the freeway. A semi pretty much t-boned (them)."
Sills said Revilla and his 29-year-old son, Christopher Revilla, both from Ogden, died as a result of the injuries they received in the crash. The 53-year-old truck driver, from Ontario, was not injured. The wreck shut I-15 for a couple of hours.
Slick road conditions and blowing snow may have contributed to other accidents throughout the night. On southbound I-15 at 1000 North a semi lost control and jackknifed. The driver was not seriously injured. On I-80 westbound at 900 East, a car hit a patch of ice and slid into a barrier. No one was injured.
UDOT's snowplows scraped and salted the major roads like I-15, I-80, I-215, and Bangerter Highway. By about 3 a.m. conditions looked greatly improved. Wednesday morning some overpasses and on and off ramps remain slick while others are dry.
UDOT Traffic Operation Center has issued a Road Weather Alert that will remain in effect until 3 p.m. It includes I-15 from Idaho to Salt Lake, I-80 from Tooele to Salt Lake and through Parley's Canyon. For a full list of the roads listed in the alert click here.
