UTAH COUNTY -- A man faces serious charges after troopers say he shot his passenger and a dog while driving on I-15.

The Utah Highway Patrol says the man was driving south on I-15 between Santaquin and Nephi when he pulled out a pistol and shot a dog that was sitting on the floor between the feet of the front-seat passenger. The passenger also was shot in the leg.

According to the Daily Herald, the man then ordered his passenger to throw the dog out the window while he tossed two guns out the window. Then the driver took his injured passenger to Central Valley Hospital in Nephi. The Herald reports a highway patrol trooper just happened to be there checking on an unrelated crash.

The suspect, Alan Askwith, was arrested for shooting while driving, having an expired license, cruelty to animals, being intoxicated and more.

Police say Askwith tried to run away after he was handcuffed but he didn't get very far.

He was booked into jail and his bail was set at $10,000 cash-only.
