SALT LAKE CITY -- As gas prices rise, how can motorists battle the price at the pump? Car care experts have a few simple tips to improve gas mileage.
"There are no real hidden tricks on fuel economy," said Shadetree Automotive manager Brian Bassett.
But air filters make a big difference, especially if they're clogged. "That restricts the amount of air that's coming into the motor," Bassett explained. "It actually makes you have to push your gas pedal down farther to get your car to go with the same power."
Bassett says underinflated tires also ruin gas mileage. And, barreling down the interstate is a bad idea, especially for trucks and SUVs.
"About 65, 68 miles an hour, that keeps the optimum fuel mileage point," he said.
Bassett says leaving the air conditioning off in the summer could save a little bit of fuel but not enough to justify compromising comfort.
