CENTERVILLE -- A Centerville man demonstrating how to handle a handgun accidentally shot his mother-in-law and 2-year-old son.

Both the woman and the boy are expected to make a full recovery from Thursday incident.

Police Lt. Paul Child said the man, 32, was showing his in-laws how to handle a .40-caliber pistol. The man was sitting on the couch next to his mother-in-law, 54, and son. Believing the gun to be unloaded, the man pulled the trigger and fired off a round. The bullet went through the lower calf of the woman and then struck the child in the foot. It then lodged in the floor.

The child was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center, while the woman was admitted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting. Child stressed that that guns should always be treated as if they are loaded and never pointed at anything you don't wish to destroy.
