Andrew Adams, KSL Newsradio Thousands of sheriffs and deputies from across the country are in Salt Lake City this weekend for their national convention. Illegal immigration and mass shootings will be among the hot topics.
The message here is illegal immigration is a problem everywhere.
"This is an issue that Congress has got to deal with," says Mecklenburg County, N.C. Sheriff Jim Pendergraph. He will tell you it's not just a problem on the streets. "Twenty-one percent of my jail population now are illegal aliens." They comprised just two percent four years ago.
Orange County, Fla. Sheriff Kevin Beary says there will also be a lot of talk about mass shootings. "Virginia Tech is a concern. You had a situation out here in Salt Lake. It's very similar," Beary says.
U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is expected as one of the keynote speakers here.
