SARATOGA SPRINGS -- Police in Saratoga Springs say two men pretending to do a good deed are actually trying to steal, and police are warning people to not leave themselves open to a crime of opportunity.

Police say they've received reports of more than three examples they think may be connected to a pair of men, both in their early- to mid-20s. Police say the two men have probably been canvassing neighborhoods in the city for potential burglary targets.

Cpl. Aaron Rosen with the Saratoga Springs police department said, "If someone comes to the door, then they're asking for a canned food donation, appearing to work for the Food Bank or the LDS Church asking for some type of donation. If they get something they take off. If they don't get an answer at doors they're kind of looking through windows, looking to see if someone is inside. If not, then they'll attempt to force entry into the residence."

In one case, the suspects barged in on somebody who was home, and that person had to call 911, Rosen confirmed.

Neighbors, upon learning of the crimes, were worried and angry.

"Hope and pray that doesn't happen, at least in my neighborhood -- my city, county, state or anywhere, for that matter," resident D.J. Rowley said. "In this kind of an economy right now where people are struggling, I think it's a terrible thing to do, pretty despicable."

Police are warning residents to think ahead. If they hear people trying doorknobs and attempting to open windows, call 911. They are also warning the public to use common sense.

"We're just asking people to be extra vigilant this holiday season. Keep their valuables, computers, gaming systems out of view," Rosen said. Police are also telling residents to keep their blinds closed while on vacation and not to have their children answer doors.

Police believe it's possible the men may be operating outside Saratoga Springs as well.

Descriptions of the suspects are not specific, but police believe the men were driving a dark green Jeep Wrangler-type vehicle with a black top. Anyone with any information is asked to call Saratoga Springs police at 801-851-4100.
