SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Logan area has been ranked as the safest metropolitan area in the country.
Orem and Provo were the 10th safest cities for communities their size, according to the annual release of the Morgan Quitno Awards.
Morgan Quitno's survey measures municipal rates for six basic crimes: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor-vehicle theft. The survey relies on FBI crime stats for 2004, released Oct. 17 of this year, to determine the rankings.
Logan and its surrounding towns ranked above Fond du Lac, Wis., and Glens Falls, N.Y. The Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, Mich., area was the most dangerous, followed by New Orleans and Memphis, Tenn.
"I think (the city) attracts great people," said Logan City Councilwoman Tami Pyfer. "I think it attracts an active, educated kind of person. We all who live here know that it's a great place to live. Now the secret's out."
Orem was ranked the 14th safest city in the United States in the "overall safest" category and was No. 10 for cities with 75,000 to 99,999 people. Provo was No. 10 among cities of 100,000 to 499,999 population.
Salt Lake City was 275th out of 369 cities.
Orem has been ranked among the nation's top 25 safest cities for several years.
"The consistency is really important," Mayor Jerry Washburn said. "If it's a one-time thing, that's great, it's a real honor. But to be consistently rated that way reflects the nature of the community -- it's a reflection of our way of life rather than a one-time ranking."
