SALT LAKE CITY -- Police believe they may have solved a string of car break-ins in Emigration and Millcreek canyons with the arrests of three men.
Salt Lake City officers waited Tuesday night for the suspects to return to their homes in the Glendale area.
Around 9:30 p.m. the men drove past the officers near 500 South and Emery Street, and police made a traffic stop. When police searched the car the men were in, they found several items that were reported stolen from cars parked along Emigration and Millcreek canyons Tuesday.
Because the men had warrants out for their arrests, they were immediately taken into custody.
"The people that were in that vehicle are well known to police. They are known gang members," said Lt. Melody Gray with the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Police believe the group has been targeting cars parked along Emigration and Millcreek canyons for several months.
"Most people hike or bike during the day, and they (the thieves) know they're going to be gone for a long period of time," Gray said.
Detectives are reviewing previous police reports of burglarized vehicles hoping to return recovered property to the rightful owners.
"They will be getting back property, which is good news and is a rarity in car prowls, so that's great information," Gray said.
