Ed Smart, Senator Hatch to Hear Report on Sex Offender Bill
October 20th, 2005 @ 7:47am

(KSL News) -- Elizabeth Smart's father, Ed Smart, visited Capitol Hill today to help Senator Orrin Hatch promote sex offender legislation.

Smart offered testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. The sex offender bill would provide tougher punishments for those who re-offend. Lawmakers who support the measure also believe the bill will protect children and families.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, (R) Utah: "There are 550,000 sex offenders out there, most of whom we don't know who they are, who don't report, who don't do anything, who are just continuing to molest children."

Ed Smart, Elizabeth Smart's Father: "When you get to the point where your child is involved in one of those horrendous, outrageous crimes, your whole opinion changes."

Smart has served as an advocate for missing child and sex offender legislation since his daughter Elizabeth was abducted from her home. She was found nine months later.
