SALT LAKE CITY (KSL News Services) -- Latinos that have driving privilege cards are finding that Washington Mutual Bank location won’t recognize their cards as a legitimate form of identification.
Community Activist Tony Yapias says he's heard about the problem in Ogden and Salt Lake City branches. “I think it’s unfortunate for Washington Mutual Bank to not accept it.”
He says he doesn't understand why one bank would single out Latinos while other banks are opening up branches designed to serve the Latino population.
“I’m sure Wells Fargo or any other institution would be happy to take the new customer, recognizing that the driving privilege card is valid identification for financial transaction purposes,” Yapias says.
He says Latinos have opened accounts with Washington Mutual when they had a regular drivers license. They say if the situation doesn’t change, they’ll take their banking business elsewhere.
