Paul Nelson, KSL NewsradioJust how satisfied are you with your work? The National Opinion Research Center asked more than 27,000 people that question. They say if you're like most people, you're not very happy with what you're doing.
The group is releasing its list of the most fulfilling jobs. Apparently, job satisfaction has little to do with money. The most satisfying job, according the group, is the clergy. Cathedral of The Madeline Pastor Joseph Mayo says the reason may be because clergymen don't do it for the pay.
The survey says 87 percent of clergymen in the poll say they are very satisfied with their job. An average of 47 percent of all people across all fields say their very satisfied. Father Mayo says he's not surprised to hear satisfaction levels are so high. "The priests are working hard, they are satisfied, they are happy, and the more important thing is they get happily every morning to do the same thing."
Father Mayo says recent headlines about scandals among many different denominations have not kept people from joining the clergy. He says, "They look at reality. They see the headlines, but they still want to do this kind of work with their lives." Father Mayo says the work allows him to give help to others and watch them progress in a spiritual way.
Researchers say the act of helping others is a common thread among the many the most satisfying jobs. The top 10 most satisfying jobs are:
1. Clergy
2. Firefighter
3. Physical Therapists
4. Authors
5. Special Education Teachers
6. Teachers
7. Education Administrators
8. Painters and Sculptors
9. Psychologists
10. Security and Financial Services Salespeople
As for the least satisfying jobs, researchers say they mostly require a low amount of skill, especially in food preparation. One job on the list of least satisfying jobs is bartender. Murphy's bartender Marley Bramble says she can see why. She says, "Occasionally, especially when there's a convention in town. It's gets a little more rowdy."
Bramble says she only makes $2.13, so she relies on tips, which she doesn't always get. "A couple of week ago, I had a table ring up about a $75 bill, and they left me nothing," Bramble says. Plus, Bramble says she sometimes has to deal with the drunken guys hitting on her.
Tending bar is not the least satisfying job around, according to the survey. The National Opinion Research Center says the top 10 least satisfying jobs are:
1. Laborers (outside the field of construction)
2. Clothing Salespeople
3. Packagers
4. Food Preparers
5. Roofers
6. Cashiers
7. Furniture Salespeople
8. Bartenders
9. Freight Handlers
10. Waiters
