SANDY -- Fans of one of the biggest bands in history got an exciting announcement Monday: Sir Paul McCartney is coming to Utah.
Officials at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy revealed they will welcome the legend to the home of Real Salt Lake on July 13 as part of his "Up and Coming" 2010 tour.
While some big name acts have played Rio Tinto before, stadium officials say Paul McCartney tops them all.
"For the residents of Utah, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He's never played here before, so not even just for a generation but for multiple generations," said Bill Manning, president of Rio Tinto Stadium. "He likely will never be back."
Manning says Paul McCartney's people have told him they are very excited about the former Beatle playing in Utah. McCartney has never even visited the state, so this concert will be a milestone.
As for why it took so long for McCartney to come here, Manning says he thinks Salt Lake City is still under the radar to most promoters. McCartney's managers apparently got a great review of Rio Tinto and Salt Lake City from the production crew of the Eagles, saying the facilities were great and the city was extremely welcoming.
Tickets for the concert go on sale Monday, May 24 at 10 a.m. Fans can purchase them on the Rio Tinto Stadium website or by calling (888) 477-5849.
American Express cardholders can buy tickets early starting Thursday, May 20 at 10 a.m. through Sunday, May 23 at 10 p.m.
McCartney's new show features a two-hour set which includes music from his solo career, as well as hits from The Beatles.
