(KSL News) BYU says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, an LDS Democrat, will speak at the university later this year.

This comes as students prepare to protest this year's commencement speaker, Vice President Dick Cheney.

Some have criticized Cheney's visit as partisan and have asked the school to provide another speaker who is a Democrat.

In a statement posted on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint's Web site, the church defends its decision saying, "The invitation is seen by the university's board of trustees as one extended to someone holding the high office of Vice President of the United States rather than to a partisan political figure."

BYU is allowing the students to hold a protest next week.
