An armed robbery this morning at the Brighton Bank near 300 West and 1700 South was just the latest in a rash of recent bank robberies.

With a silver pistol in his hand, the robber ordered half a dozen employees to the floor. There were no customers inside the bank, and luckily none of the employees were hurt. Police are looking for the robber.

"He fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a two-door green Honda. We found that later. He ditched that. It was stolen out of West Valley earlier," Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Lara Jones said. "It's imperative we find this gentleman. If you're willing to brandish a silver handgun, we assume you're willing to use it."

The U.S. Bank near 1900 East and Murray-Holladay Road was also robbed this morning. Police don't think it's the same thief, but this U.S. Bank location has been hit twice this month -- once by a man wearing a fake beard. Just days ago, a "bearded bandit" also robbed a Key Bank in West Jordan.

"From what I understand, there's usually an increase in this type of crime during the holidays. But to be able to say it's tied to the economy, it's just too early to tell," Jones said.

At this point, investigators are still trying to determine if some of these robberies are connected. If you have some helpful information, please call Salt Lake City police at 801-799-3000.
