PARIS (AP) — Former Olympic champion Florent Manaudou is taking a break from swimming to focus on playing handball.

Manaudou, a gold medalist in the 50-meter freestyle at the 2012 London Olympics, says he has started training with French club Aix-en-Provence.

Manaudou insisted that he will keep swimming at some meetings, including the French interclub championships in November, but will ease up his workload in the pool.

The 25-year-old Frenchman said he made the decision because he wants to "preserve and keep intact the pleasure that has been my main drive" over the past eight years.

Manaudou, who also claimed a silver medal in the 50-meter free at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, says his ambition is to "give my best and find a different source of pleasure" in handball.
