ROME (AP) — Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 fencing world championships as a test event ahead of the Olympics.

It will be the first time Brazil has hosted the tournament.

The 2017 event will be held in Leipzig, Germany, the sole candidate after Doha withdrew its candidature.

Germany has hosted the world championships on two previous occasions — including in Leipzig in 2005 — and West Germany also did so once.

The decisions were made during the International Fencing Federation's annual congress, which was held in Rome.

Next year's world championships will take place in Moscow.
