BEIJING (AP) — Former Real Madrid and Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has taken over as head coach of Hebei China Fortune in the China Super League.

Pellegrini, who won the Premier League title with Manchester City in 2014, takes the reins from former Chinese national Li Tie at the club based in the northeastern port city of Qinghuangdao.

Pellegrini joins former Brazil chief Luis Scolari and England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson among China's cash-flush clubs.

Hebei's squad includes one of the league's biggest signings, former Arsenal striker Gervinho. Chinese Super League clubs splashed out close to $300 million in the winter transfer window on big names from Europe and South America, including Ramires, Alex Teixeira, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jackson Martinez.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has made football success a national priority.
