NEW YORK (AP) — Ike Opara scored early and Sporting Kansas City made it stand up, beating New York City FC 1-0 on Saturday in blustery conditions with intermittent flurries all afternoon.

Kansas City (1-1-2) ended five-game winless streak that dated to last year.

Sporting Kansas City broke through 12 minutes in when Opara powered home a leaping header from the center of the box just inside the near post off a long throw in by Matt Besler.

SKC's Graham Zusi sailed an open attempt in the 32nd minute. Moments later, the U.S. national team player pulled up lame and ended his day in the 40th minute.

Jimmy Medranda nearly made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, but his left-footed attempt just missed high.

NYCFC suffered its first loss in its initial season, falling to 1-1-2.
