SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Real Salt Lake forward Joao Plata is scheduled to have surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot, the team announced Monday. He is expected to be out three to four months.

Plata suffered the injury while changing direction during a training session, but he was not touched by another player. The team is in the midst of its first week of preseason training camp.

Real Salt Lake recently bought Plata's contract and signed him to a multi-year deal. He was the team's leading scorer in 2014 with a career-high 13 goals and his 14 assists over the last two seasons are the second-most on the roster.

Real Salt Lake is scheduled to scrimmage the New England Revolution on Saturday.
