PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers have acquired the rights to Jake Layman out of Maryland, who was selected by the Magic with the 47th pick in the NBA draft on Thursday night.

The Blazers sent a future second-round pick and cash considerations to Orlando in exchange for the 6-foot-9 forward. Yahoo! Sports reported that Orlando received $1.2 million and a second-round selection in the 2019 draft.

As a senior, Layman averaged 11.8 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Terrapins, who finished 27-9 and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2003. His career averages over four seasons at Maryland were 10.2 points and 4.8 rebounds.

He finished his career with 1,436 points and 674 rebounds, joining only 11 other players in school history with more than 1,400 points and 600 rebounds.

"Jake is a high character young man with a skill set we value on both ends of the floor," Blazers President of Basketball Operations Neil Olshey said. "His ability to defend multiple positions and shoot the ball from range will be positive additions to our roster."

The Blazers went into the draft with no selections.

Portland had sent its first-round pick to the Denver Nuggets as part of the 2015 trade to acquire Arron Afflalo, who is no longer with the Blazers. The second-round pick went to Chicago as part of the 2013 draft deal that brought Allen Crabbe to Portland.

Olshey said last month that the team would be aggressive on draft night even without a pick, with resources to make moves. However, he vowed that he would only make deals if they made sense for the Blazers.

Portland went 44-38 this past season, surpassing expectations after the departure of all the team's starters from the previous season except for point guard Damian Lillard.

Lillard and backcourt teammate CJ McCollum, named the league's Most Improved Player, helped lead the Blazers to the second round of the playoffs.
