WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue University says athletic director Morgan Burke has announced plans to retire in July 2017.

The school says Burke made his plans known to university leaders more than a year ago and informed alumni at an event Thursday in Naples, Florida.

Purdue Board of Trustees chairman Michael Berghoff will lead a national search to find a new director. The school says the search committee also will include three former Purdue athletic greats: Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and former NFL players Rod Woodson and Matt Light.

Burke has led Purdue athletics since 1993. During his tenure, the 1999 women's basketball team and 2010 women's golf team won national titles and eight student-athletes have captured a combined 14 individual national crowns. The football team played in 10 bowl games in 12 years from 1997-2008, and the men's basketball team won three straight Big Ten Conference regular-season championships in 1994-96.
