FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — Boston Celtics assistant coach and former player Walter McCarty has pleaded not guilty to larceny for allegedly failing to pay $18,000 he owes for the purchase and installation of cabinets.
Prosecutors say the 40-year-old McCarty ordered more than $30,000 worth of cabinetry for the home he's building in Wayland, and paid a $12,000 deposit.
Authorities say a second check for $18,000 bounced, and several requests by the cabinet company for the money have been rebuffed.
McCarty's lawyer called it an unfortunate misunderstanding and says it stems from the fact that McCarty was a victim of identity theft that compromised his bank account.
McCarty in a statement said he hopes to "resolve the matter soon." He was released after his arraignment Thursday without bail and is back in court Dec. 11.
