MIAMI (AP) — The Miami Heat have promoted David Fizdale to assistant head coach, and hired Keith Smart and Chris Quinn as assistants on Erik Spoelstra's staff.

The team announced the moves Wednesday, exactly six weeks before Miami opens the regular season at home against Washington.

Fizdale has been an assistant coach with the Heat since 2008, when Spoelstra became head coach. Smart, the hero of Indiana's 1987 NCAA championship-game victory over Syracuse, has been an NBA head coach over parts of four seasons in Cleveland, Golden State and Sacramento.

Quinn played in 246 NBA games, 173 of them with the Heat. He also played for New Jersey, San Antonio and Cleveland, and spent last season as Northwestern's director of player development under Chris Collins.

Miami opens training camp on Sept. 27.
