NCAA MEN'S TOURNAMENT-THIRD ROUND
Gators and Cardinals win
UNDATED (AP) — The 11th-seeded Dayton Flyers are now part of the Sweet 16 in the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
The Flyers have followed Thursday's one-point win over sixth-seeded Ohio State by squeaking past No. 3 Syracuse 55-53. Dayton held on after Jordan Sibert (SY'-burt) hit a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left to put the Flyers ahead 52-46.
Dyshawn Pierre scored 14 points for Dayton, which next faces either Kansas or Stanford in the South Regional semifinals Thursday in Memphis.
A pair of Big 10 teams barely avoided upsets.
Second seed Wisconsin rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat No. 7 Oregon 85-77. Frank Kaminsky finished with 19 points, Traevon Jackson had 16 and Jason Gasser had 13 for the Badgers, who hit five free throws in the closing seconds to clinch the win.
Fourth seed Michigan State blew a 16-point lead and trailed late in the second half before pulling out an 80-73 win over No. 12 Harvard. Branden Dawson scored a career-high 26 points as the Spartans moved into the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in the last 17 seasons.
Top overall seed Florida opened the third round by adding to its school-record winning streak.
Scottie Wilbekin scored 21 points and the Gators picked up their 28th consecutive win by silencing ninth seed Pittsburgh 61-45. Patric Young added seven points and eight rebounds for the Gators, who play again Thursday in Memphis.
In other NCAA tournament action:
— Second seed Villanova is done after Connecticut's Shabazz Napier pumped in 25 points to lead a 77-65 triumph over the Wildcats. Ryan Boatright had 11 points and rebounds for the Huskies, who erupted 52 points after leading just 25-24 at intermission.
— No. 2 Michigan is in the Sweet 16 after Nik Stauskas contributed 17 points and eight assists in a convincing 79-65 win against Texas. Jordan Morgan added 15 points and 10 boards for the Wolverines, who won despite being outrebounded 41-30.
— Louisville was a 66-51 winner against Saint Louis as Luke Hancock delivered 21 points for the defending champs. Montrezl Harrell finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Cardinals advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third straight year.
— No. 4 San Diego State is in the regional semifinals for the second time in school history after Xavier Thames scored 30 points and had five assists in a 63-44 rout of North Dakota State. Dwayne Polee II was the only other Aztec in double figures with 15 points.
NBA-SCHEDULE
Bobcats halt skid
UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers are just two away from tying the NBA record for consecutive losses.
Joakim (JOH'-keem) Noah finished with 20 points and Jimmy Butler scored 17 as the Chicago Bulls handed the Sixers their 24th straight loss, 91-81. Taj Gibson added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls, who prevented the Indiana Pacers from wrapping up the Central Division title.
The Cleveland Cavaliers dropped 26 in a row during the 2010-11 season. Philadelphia would have to win at San Antonio to avoid tying that.
At the other end of the spectrum is San Antonio, which picked up its 13th consecutive victory by downing the Warriors 99-90 at Golden State. Tony Parker had 20 points and five assists, while Tiago Splitter added 17 points and 14 rebounds to help the Western Conference-leading Spurs take a two-game lead over Oklahoma City.
Elsewhere in the NBA:
— Memphis held Indiana to a season-low in points while Mike Conley contributed 21 points and Zach Randolph had a double-double in the Grizzlies' 82-71 win over the Eastern Conference leaders. Mike Miller added 13 points as Memphis won for the seventh time in nine games and maintained its hold on the final Western Conference playoff spot.
— Indiana still tops the East by three games over Miami after Anthony Davis had 30 points, 11 rebounds and three steals to lead New Orleans past the Heat 105-95. The Heat absorbed their seventh loss in 11 games despite LeBron James, who finished with 25 points, nine assists and eight rebounds after twisting an ankle in the third quarter.
— The Los Angeles Clippers were a 112-103 winner over Detroit as Chris Paul delivered game highs of 28 points and 15 assists. Blake Griffin added 25 points to the Clippers' 12th victory in 13 games.
— James Harden scored 17 of his 37 points in the third quarter while Houston was building a 29-point lead in a 118-111 win at Cleveland. Harden hit five 3-pointers, made all 14 of his free throws and had 11 assists before sitting out the final period of the rout.
— Al Jefferson scored 28 points and Charlotte ended a two-game skid by clobbering Portland 124-94. Kemba Walker finished with 26 points and Gerald Henderson had 23 in the Bobcats' highest-scoring game and most-lopsided victory of the season.
— Utah topped Orlando 89-88 on Trey Burke's 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds left. Burke finished with 17 points and Richard Jefferson had a team-high 21 as the Jazz ended a six-game slide while handing the Magic their eighth straight loss.
MLB-OPENING GAMES
Dodgers sweep DBacks
UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading back to the United States after completing a Sydney sweep.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (hee-YUHN'-jihn YOO) allowed just two hits while striking out five over five shutout innings of the Dodgers' 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Australia. Yasiel Puig (YAH'-see-ul pweeg) drove in two runs while collecting three of the Dodgers' 13 hits.
Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer to cap the Diamondbacks' four-run ninth.
The Dodgers opened the major league regular season with a 3-1 victory before leaving Sydney with a 2-0 record.
Also in the majors:
— Reds utility player Skip Schumaker will miss about a month after dislocating his left shoulder. He was injured while making a diving attempt to cut off a line drive hit by Angel Franco in the left centerfield gap in the seventh inning of Cincinnati's exhibition game.
— The Indians have released outfielder Jeff Francoeur (fran-KOOR'), who had been signed to a minor league free-agent contract in January and was invited to major league training camp. The 30-year-old Francoeur had 35 at-bats with the Indians this spring, hitting .286 with one home run and 10 RBI.
— Ron Roenicke (REHN'-ih-kee) has a contract to manage the Brewers through next year after the club exercised its option for 2015. Roenicke is 253-233 in there seasons with the Brewers winning the 2011 NL Central title and a franchise-record 96 games his first season.
NHL-SCHEDULE
Pens, Wings and Flyers win
UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Bruins extended the longest winning streak of the NHL season by rallying past the Coyotes in Arizona.
Jarom Iginla (ih-GIHN'-luh) scored the first and last goals while the Bruins were scoring three times in the third period of their 12th consecutive win, 4-2 at Phoenix. Shawn Thornton provided the go-ahead goal with 3:18 remaining as the Bruins kept their six-point lead in the Eastern Conference.
The Philadelphia Flyers stayed hot by downing the top team in the West.
Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and Jakub Voracek each had a goal and an assist as the Flyers stormed to their fifth straight win, 4-1 over St. Louis. Steve Mason stopped 32 shots and blanked the Blues after Jaden Schwartz scored a short-handed goal 6:23 into the first period.
The Flyers are 12-2-1 in their last 15 games, not bad for a team that got off to a 1-7-0 start.
The Blues have been outscored 8-1 in dropping their last two games. They remain one point away from clinching a playoff berth and lead the West by just one point over San Jose.
Also on ice:
— Pittsburgh beat Tampa Bay 4-3 on James Neal's power-play goal 87 seconds into overtime. Evgeni Malkin had two goals and two assists while Sidney Crosby added a goal and two assists in the Penguins' ninth straight win over the Lightning.
— Jonathan Quick picked up its fifth shutout of the season and earned his team-record 172nd victory in the Kings' 4-0 win over Florida in Los Angeles. Trevor Lewis had a goal and an assist to help the Kings finish 2-3 on a five-game homestand that followed an eight-game winning streak.
— Henrik Lundqvist handled 21 shots as the New York Rangers shut out New Jersey 2-0 to move into sixth place in the East, two points ahead of Toronto. Rick Nash scored the game-winner midway through the second period to back Lundqvist's fifth shutout of the year and 50th of his career.
— The Maple Leafs suffered their fourth straight loss as Tomas Plekanec (pleh-KAH'-nehts) furnished the tiebreaking goal with 8:46 left in Montreal's 4-3 victory at Toronto. Brian Gionta (jee-AHN'-tah) and Rene Bourque each had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who climbed within one point of Tampa Bay for second place in the Atlantic Division.
— Gustav Nyquist 's (GUHS'-tahv NOO'-kwihsts) third-period goal pushed Detroit past Minnesota 3-2. Brendan Smith and David Legwand had power-play goals in the Red Wings' fourth victory in five games.
— Detroit and Washington are tied for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth after the Capitals rallied for a 3-2 shootout win over the Sharks in San Jose. Nicklas Backstrom scored the game-winner in the third shootout round after Chris Brown scored the equalizer with 7 ½ minutes left in regulation.
— Eric Staal, Jordan Staal and Riley Nash scored during a 2:53 span of the second period to give Carolina a 3-1 lead in a 3-2 victory at Winnipeg. Cam Ward was superb in making 34 saves.
— Dallas snapped a four-game losing streak as Trevor Daley and Jamie Benn scored third-period goals to push the Stars past Ottawa 3-1. Jordie Benn set up two goals to help the Stars deal the Senators their sixth straight loss.
— Curtis Glencross scored three of Calgary's final four goals to register his third career hat trick in an 8-1 laugher over Edmonton. Matt Stajan (STAY'-jan) added a goal and three assists in the Flames' highest-scoring output since a 9-1 win at Colorado in Feb. 2014.
GOLF-ARNOLD PALMER INVITATIONAL
Scott falters but still leads
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Adam Scott has maintained the lead after three rounds of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He began the day with a seven-shot lead and ended it three shots in front of Keegan Bradley. Scott had an up and down round of 1-under-71 to finish play 15-under-par.
Matt Every and Jason Kokrak are tied for third at 11-under.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Andrade and Funk share lead
SAUCIER, Miss. (AP) —Billy Andrade (AN'-drayd) and Fred Funk share the lead through two rounds of the Champions Tour event in Mississippi. Andrade shot a 7-under-par 65 and Funk shot a 67 to leave them 8-under with one round remaining.
Jay Haas, Fred Couples and Jeff Maggert are one stroke back.
LPGA-JTBC FOUNDERS CUP
Ko surges to lead
PHOENIX (AP) — Lydia Ko is the leader after three rounds of the JTBC Founders Cup in Phoenix. The teenager fired a 5-under 67 to move one shot ahead of Jessica Korda and Mirim Lee.
