NEW YORK (AP) — Veteran CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker is joining the cast of the network's "60 Minutes."

CBS said Thursday that Whitaker, a Los Angeles-based newsman who has been with CBS since 1984, will move to New York and begin on the Sunday night show next fall.

He'll join Scott Pelley, Steve Kroft, Lesley Stahl, Bob Simon and Lara Logan as regular correspondents.

While "60 Minutes" is television's longest-running and most prestigious newsmagazine, it's had a rough year. Logan remains on a leave of absence for her role in a much-criticized story about the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.
