PROVO — Celebrating its fifth year of rocking the rooftop, the famed Provo Rooftop Concert Series is back. This season, there’s a killer lineup of rock, pop, blues and rap.
The series highlights the very best of the best in Provo — they do not take submissions, but ask bands that have risen above the din of local music to a certain level of stardom.
"We look at bands who have a great show to put on from sound to musicianship, who are aggressively looking to build their audience, and who bring something unique and interesting to the stage," Courtney Kendrick, one of the founders of the Rooftop Concerts, said. "We always say to band inquires 'if you're working hard we'll find you.'"
Among those local talents are several names that have blown up in the last year.
“The first concert I went to in Utah was the Rooftop Concert Series when Imagine Dragons headlined in 2011,” said keyboardist Jake Justice, of We Are The Strike. “Since then, the summer concert series has become a staple of Utah music and it is an honor to be a part of that.”
We Are The Strike is headlining the June 6 show, and many other notable names in the Provo scene will be featured in the coming months — Desert Noises, Mimi Knowles, The Moth & The Flame and Fictionist are among the performers. (For the complete list, click here.)
The Provo Town Square parking terrace is home for the concerts, at 100 West and 100 North in Provo. The founders of the show encourage music lovers to make a night of it by heading to a nearby restaurant before the show to further celebrate the blossoming downtown Provo area.
“These concerts bring together everything I love about Provo — great music, breathtaking views, friends & families all having a great time together,” wrote founder Sarah Wiley on therooftopconcertseries.com.
Sponsored by Google Fiber and the city of Provo, the shows are free for attendees. If you want to be up all night, Muse Music Cafe has a dance party afterward, so you can ride your concert high late into the evening.
