ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The University of Michigan's School of Public Health plans to establish a new Department of Nutritional Sciences.
The school's Board of Regents on Thursday approved a request from the School of Public Health, citing growing student interest and an increasing national emphasis on nutrition as a key to good health.
Starting in fall 2015, students will be able to begin work on a Master of Public Health in Nutritional Sciences, Master of Science in Nutritional Sciences or a doctorate in Nutritional Sciences.
The department's long-term plan is to offer additional undergraduate courses and potentially an undergraduate nutritional sciences degree.
In the proposal, officials noted increases over the last several decades in scholarship and research in the areas of obesity, chronic disease risks, food safety and other issues.
