FARR WEST — Several vehicles were involved in an accident Sunday, including a police motorcycle, when drivers failed to yield at an existing incident, officials said.

The initial accident involved a Hyundai Elantra that had crashed into the median cable barrier and to which trooper J. Zilles responded about 1:30 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, Zilles parked his police motorcycle behind the Elantra in the median. Another trooper arrived in a marked patrol car and set up behind the crash to alert traffic of its presence.

At about 2 p.m., a Honda Odyssey slowed as it approached the crash. The Honda was then struck from behind by a white Volvo with California plates that was following the Honda too closely. After the Honda was hit, the driver veered left and struck the rear of the Hyundai from the original incident.

A few minutes later, a silver Dodge truck pulling a small trailer carrying two ATVs failed to slow down enough to avoid the previous crashes, veering into the median where it first hit Zilles’ motorcycle before hitting the median cable barrier. The truck rode up onto the barrier and traveled until it struck the Hyundai from the original crash.

The drivers of the vehicles previously involved in the accident were out of their cars talking with Zilles when his motorcycle was hit. They were able to move out of the way when the truck approached, and no one was injured.

At about 2:30 p.m., there was another accident when two vehicles, a red Ford Focus and a gray Hyundai Sonata, slowed due to the previous incidents. A semi-truck from Washington was unable to stop in time and struck the back of both vehicles.

The driver of the Ford, a female, hit her head on the steering wheel and suffered minor injuries. All occupants were wearing seat belts and were cleared by medical personnel at the scene.

All lanes of traffic were reopened by 4 p.m.

Officials want to remind drivers to slow down when approaching an accident, to move over to give responding officers safe room to operate, and to not follow the vehicle in front of you too closely.
