CEDAR CITY — Just three days after a 44-0 win at in-state rival Weber State, Southern Utah offensive coordinator Gary Crowton has resigned from his position with the Thunderbirds' football program.

Crowton will be temporarily reassigned to be a special advisor to new athletic director Jason Butikofer, the university announced in a statement.

"At this time, I feel like it is important for me to step away from the SUU football program because of personal reasons," Crowton said in a statement. "I wish the team and coach Lamb the very best.

"I appreciate this University and I have really enjoyed my association with the football program. The timing is unfortunate but I have some issues that need to be dealt with at this time."

Crowton, an Orem native, graduated from BYU in 1983 and was the head coach of the Cougars from 2001-04. He then moved on to offensive coordinator roles with Louisiana State, Maryland, and the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers before landing at Southern Utah in 2014.

Thunderbird assistant offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Justin Walterscheid will handle the vacant coordinator position moving forward. No timetable is set to find a replacement for Crowton, who informed the players and coaches in a team meeting at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

"He has been a greate friend and an amazing mentor for me," SUU coach Ed Lamb said of Crowton in a statement. I appreciate the base and philosophy he has provided for our team."

The Thunderbirds (3-2, 2-0 Big Sky) won their third-straight game with a 44-0 win at Weber State, also beating Brevard College and Northern Colorado by a combined score of 129-10.
