Although native to western North America, the Rainbow Trout is not native to Utah. But it is extremely popular to Utah anglers.
Because of its popularity, the Rainbow has been introduced to cold waters throughout the state. Most Rainbow Trout do not reproduce in the wild, and the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources stocks millions of fish each year.
From 1971 through 1997, the Rainbow Trout was out state fish. That change when the state legislature adopted the Bonneville cutthroat trout in its place.
Rainbow Trout eat primarily invertebrates, though some larger Rainbow Trout eat other fish.
