It's hard to imagine that elk were almost non-existent in Utah just over 100 years ago. Elk were one of the most common game animals in Utah prior to settlement times. Indians, trappers, and pioneers all used elk as a source of food and clothing. Unrestricted hunting eliminated most of the elk in Utah by the end of the nineteenth century. In fact, Elk hunting seasons were closed in Utah in 1898.
