OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Christian University will host two icons of the civil rights movement next month at its second annual History Speaks event.
The school announced Tuesday that Claudette Colvin and Fred Gray would speak at the Feb. 9 program. Colvin and Gray were on the forefront of the civil rights movement for racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s.
Colvin was the first person arrested for resisting bus segregation in Montgomery, Alabama, which sparked the Montgomery bus boycott. Gray was Colvin's attorney after she was charged with disorderly conduct.
Colvin was 15 years old when she was arrested in 1955 for refusing to surrender her seat to a white woman on a Montgomery bus. Her arrest took place nine months before the same thing happened to Rosa Parks.
