PROVO — The latest expansion of the Provo Missionary Training Center will push development South into Brigham Young University's campus.

Thursday's announcement from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unveiled some of the details of how it plans to increase the number of missionaries it can accommodate in Provo. A rise in the number of missionaries has driven the church to recently announce the Provo MTC expansion and a new MTC in Mexico City.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced plans to expand the Provo Missionary Training Center to the South of the existing MTC campus where the BYU Laundry Building and the Auxiliary Maintenance Building are currently located," church spokesman Cody Craynor said in a statement. "Design of the expansion is ongoing and further details will be provided in neighborhood meetings and in announcements in the coming months."

The number of missionaries housed in the Provo MTC was predicted to rise from 2,800 to 7,800 during the summer of 2013 and then stay around 6,000 until 2016. BYU-approved housing at Wyview Park and Raintree was leased to the church in an effort to help find room to house and train the missionaries.

BYU auxiliary and laundry operations will be relocated to the southern end of Wymount Terrace, BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said in a statement. The buildings will be located in what is currently known as Quad 7, where married students are housed.

"Although the quad will need to be removed to accommodate the two buildings, residents will be able to stay in their apartments throughout the fall and winter semesters," Jenkins said.

She said BYU is still working out the details of the new buildings, and more information will be made available when the plans are finalized.
