Books for Mom to read

1. “The Paris Wife” by Paula McLain

If Mom is a fan of historical fiction, this is the book to get. In 1920, Hadley Richardson, only 20 years old, met Ernest Hemingway. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage they moved to Paris where life quickly became glamorous — and complicated. Excruciatingly romantic, beautifully told and absolutely unforgettable.

2. “The Sugar Queen” by Sarah Addison Allen

This enchanting tale of sweets, snow and romance has everything: interesting characters, abundant quirkiness, unique descriptions and just enough magic realism to bring it all together. The story includes love so passionate it can boil the water in the coffee pot, books that appear when a reader needs them and magic in the color red. Warning: Do not give this book to Mom without including her favorite treat to eat as she reads.

Content note: a few moderately detailed sexual references and a handful of foul language, including a few F-words.

3. “Island of the Blue Dolphins” by Scott O’Dell

For a lighter, quicker, but still engrossing read, give Mom this classic Newbery Medal winner. Far off the coast of California is an island. Indians once claimed the land as their own, until the day they sailed away. Karana, a young girl, was left behind. Haunting and unusual, strange and beautiful, this book is a must-read.

Books for Mom to read to the kids (or grandkids)

1. “Imagine a Night” by Sarah L. Thomson and Rob Gonsalves

This stunning, gorgeous picture book is a delightful trip into the imagination. Each illustration transforms from the ordinary to the extraordinary in ingenious twists of color and perspective. Everyone will be mesmerized.

2. “A Chair for My Mother” by Vera B. Williams

This Caldecott Honor book is not only vibrantly illustrated, but the story is sweet and endearing. Rosa and her family work hard, setting aside their spare change to buy a big soft chair for Mother. When their small apartment burns down the whole neighborhood bans together to make their new home a beautiful place.

3. “How Much is a Million?” by David M. Schwartz and Steven Kellogg

Inquiring little minds want to know: How much? This basic math concept is perfectly and engagingly taught in this fun picture book. Making easy-to-understand comparisons, aided by fun illustrations, young readers learn just how much those big numbers represent.
